Harnessing the power of data and analytics is pivotal to ensuring patient safety within the NHS. From identifying early warning signs of clinical deterioration to predicting and preventing avoidable harm, innovative use of data can drive meaningful improvements in care. This category celebrates projects and initiatives that have successfully leveraged data and analytics to address patient safety challenges, improve outcomes, and create value for patients and staff alike.

Whether through predictive models, real-time monitoring, or actionable insights, this award recognises the individuals, teams, or organisations who are shaping the future of patient safety with impactful, data-driven solutions.

Eligibility

Entries are welcomed from NHS organisations, Integrated Care Systems (ICSs), Integrated Care Boards (ICBs), and the wider public sector health and social care. Projects should demonstrate how data and analytics have been used to measurably improve patient safety outcomes, with potential for replication and scalability.

Ambition

  • Clearly define the patient safety challenge addressed and the context within which the initiative was implemented.
  • Describe the goals and targets of the project, including both quantitative and qualitative objectives.
  • Highlight how innovative or best-practice approaches in data and analytics were applied to tackle the identified challenge.

Outcome

  • Provide clear evidence of improvements in patient safety directly attributable to the initiative, including reduced harm, enhanced care quality, or improved clinical decision-making.
  • Support outcomes with quantitative data (e.g., incident reduction rates, improved compliance metrics) and qualitative insights (e.g., patient or staff feedback).
  • Highlight wider organisational benefits, such as enhanced leadership, operational efficiencies, or system learning.

Spread

  • Demonstrate how the success of the initiative has been disseminated within or beyond the organisation.
  • Provide evidence of replication or adaptation in other settings, departments, or organisations.
  • Showcase the potential for broader application across the NHS and public healthcare system.

Value

  • Demonstrate value creation in terms of improved patient experience, reduced bureaucracy, or time saved for clinical and non-clinical staff.
  • Outline financial or operational efficiencies realised through the initiative.
  • Provide testimonials or feedback from patients, families, or stakeholders to support the initiative’s impact.

Involvement

  • Highlight how collaboration across disciplines, including data specialists, clinicians, and patient representatives, contributed to the project’s success.
  • Demonstrate how patient perspectives or feedback informed the design or execution of the initiative.
  • Provide evidence of a culture that supports innovation, encourages input from all staff levels, and fosters continuous improvement.
