Nurses play a pivotal role in safeguarding patient safety and driving improvements in healthcare outcomes. This category celebrates initiatives where nurses have taken the lead in designing and implementing projects that address critical patient safety challenges. These projects may focus on preventing avoidable harm, improving care quality, or ensuring the safety and dignity of patients across diverse care settings.

This award aims to highlight the innovation, leadership, and dedication demonstrated by nursing teams and individuals who have made a tangible impact on patient safety.

Eligibility

Entries are welcomed from across the NHS and the wider public sector health and social care system (ICSs, ICBs, social care etc.). This category is open to individual nurses, nursing teams, or collaborations led by nurses that have proactively addressed patient safety issues through innovative approaches.

Ambition

  • Clearly define the patient safety issue or challenge the initiative sought to address.
  • Describe the project or initiative, including the goals set, steps taken to implement the solution, and how success was anticipated and measured.
  • Explain how the initiative leveraged nursing expertise and was informed by existing best practices or evidence in patient safety.

Outcome

  • Provide evidence of measurable improvements in patient safety directly attributable to the initiative.
  • Include quantitative data (e.g., reduction in adverse events, improved compliance with safety protocols) and qualitative outcomes, such as patient and staff feedback.
  • Demonstrate how the initiative has consistently supported the delivery of safer, higher-quality care.

Spread

  • Highlight efforts to share the success of the initiative across the organisation or more widely.
  • Provide evidence of how the project has been replicated, scaled, or adapted in other teams, departments, or organisations.
  • Demonstrate the potential for broader application and impact beyond the initial setting.

Value

  • Demonstrate how the initiative has improved patient safety while enhancing the patient experience or staff efficiency.
  • Outline any cost savings or other efficiencies achieved as a result of the project.
  • Include testimonials from patients, families, or stakeholders to illustrate the initiative’s success.

Involvement

  • Showcase how patients and their families were involved in co-designing or shaping the initiative.
  • Provide evidence of a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach involving nurses, other healthcare professionals, and key stakeholders.
  • Illustrate how the initiative fostered a culture of openness, where staff at all levels felt empowered to raise concerns or contribute to the safety agenda.
